Getting the 4e Power Toolkit PHB2 compatible

I’m going to get back in touch with the 4e Power Toolkit very soon, and my priority will be getting it compatible with the changes to powers in the Player’s Handbook 2 (aftereffects, melee 1, 2, etc). To a lesser degree, I’ll address as many bugs as I can, and then review what features still need to be implemented.

Thanks to everyone for putting up with the delay, as well as those who have provided feedback thus far.

CrawlNotes 2.2 beta released

Updated CrawlNotes to 2.2 about a week ago. Those who are regular users would have seen the upgrade message and (hopefully) already have the new version. Otherwise, you can grab it from the apps page.

2.2 fixes a data corruption bug with deleting adding rooms and switching levels. That’s it!

A short break

Need to take a short break from Playwrite, Zafehouse and my other projects. Maybe a month or two.

Just dealing with some personal issues right now and I need to focus on what’s important.

See you on the other side. Or the flip side. Or whatever the better, happier side is. :)

Don’t shit your pants

Zombies? Great Ones?

No, this is true survival horror.

4e Power Toolkit v0.2 Beta released

Just over a week since the 4e Power Toolkit was released and close to 1150 people have checked it out already! I’d hate to leave them hanging for an update.

So, I won’t.

Here are the changes you’ll find in v0.2 Beta of the Toolkit:

* Fixed bug with Power Creator that would cause the “Attack type” combo box to fill forever

* Power names may now be 36 characters, up from 30

* Hit, Miss and Effect text now correctly formats carriage returns and multiple spaces

* The Auto-detect target function now uses “creature” and “creatures” instead of “enemy” and “enemies”

* A power card template based on the power layouts in the PHB is available under “Templates\Power cards”

* HTML exported via the Class Creator will no longer add titles for levels or frequencies that have no powers

* Added “Melee or Ranged” option to attack types

* Added NYI text to power card HTML export

* Fixed a typo in the “Classes” help tab

* Added changelog to Help window

Thanks to everyone who’s provided feedback and bug reports so far, every bit of help is appreciated! I’ll look to add the Upload feature next version so everyone can start checking out the awesome classes and powers being cooked up out there!

To grab the latest version, head over to the Downloads section.

Road sign says: Zombie invasion underway

Even with the knowledge that it’s not real, I would have done a U-turn over the median stripe and put the pedal to the metal. So to speak.

Hey… you can never be too careful.

CrawlNotes 2.1 beta and an apps page!

I’ve just released a minor update to CrawlNotes, bringing it to v2.1. The biggest change is a bug fix to stop the program from crashing when rooms are deleted and refreshed. If you already have the application, the auto-update feature should let you know a new version is up. Otherwise, head on over to the apps page and grab it.

What? An apps page? Yes, I thought it was about time to get a basic page up where one can easily download my programs. Now I need to find somewhere for it on the main site…

Introducing the 4e Power Toolkit: Create your own classes, races, powers and power cards

Forget Word. Forget Excel. Forget the mash of programs you’ve been using to roll your own powers and classes. Now you have a tool that does it all.

First, there’s the Power Creator. This lets you make powers just like the 4e Power Creator before it. Except this has support for Secondary and Tertiary attacks as well as Sustain and more. You can even add your own power sources and keywords using text files.

With a few powers created, you can load them into the Class Creator. Play around with primary stats, proficiencies and other details, and then export it all as a pretty document, presented much like the PHB. HTML is the only option right now, but PDF and text formats are not far away.

Finally, there’s the Power Card Creator. Export your powers as power cards using the template you want. Templates are made in HTML, so they can include images, CSS… whatever you want. There are two included with the program – one optimised for HTML and the other PDF. And yes, you can export the cards to PDF and it’ll format them all nice-like. What if Jane Austen and George A. Romero had made book-love?

I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice for one, very good reason – dudes don’t read Jane Austen. My supply of Man Cards is already precariously low… I have to reserve what little I have left for girly drinks.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies might be my salvation. You know, because I’ve been so desperate to read Pride and Prejudice. Sarcasm aside, I really do need to sit down with a good book soon or the Internet will turn my brain into unproductive mush.

Amazon’s description of this spawn of classic English literature and one of horror’s classic creatures is as follows:

“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone crunching zombie action.

Don’t know about you, but it’s enough to get me interested.

It’s not out until June of this year, but you’re free to preorder. I’m happy enough to wait for a few reviews before putting down my buckage.

Text-based survival horror: When Zombies meet Zork

What can 48 hours of game design and coding produce? A text-based survival horror game apparently. When I say “text-based” I don’t mean roguelike (that’s Zero Day, folks). I’m talking Zork.

A team of four from New York produced this gem, entitled “From A to Z and Back Again”, in two days for the Global Game Jam, held January 30 to Feburary 1. At first you might think “What the hell?”. Don’t worry, that thought will pass, to be replaced with a general feeling of awesomeness and a tingle in your pants that roughly translates to “Damn it man, play it now!”.

I thought 7 days was hardcore when I wrote Zafehouse. 48 hours is madness. Mind you, Zafehouse was a solo effort, so I don’t feel so bad.

I haven’t had a chance to play AtoZ myself, but when I get home I’ll give it a go and compose my impressions. For now, you can grab it from Global Game Jam site. Note you’ll need a Z-Machine interpreter; there’s a list of Windows versions here, though a buttload for other platforms can be found at the same link.
